Breaking Bad notched its highest rating ever with its series
finale, “Felina.” 10.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the riveting series
end. It scored a Nielsen rating of 5.2. For comparison, the season four finale,
“Face Off,” generated only a 2 rating. That alone is astounding improvement. In
terms of total viewers, Entertainment Weekly notes that Breaking Bad grew 442% from the end of season 4. In terms of cable
records, it ranked third to HBO’s The
Sopranos (11.9 million) and Sex &
the City (10.6 million). In this era
of countless channels and television options, Breaking Bad’s ratings were quite
impressive.
The finale also generated enormous buzz on social media. On
the night of the finale, there were 1.24 million Breaking Bad tweets, according
to Media Life Magazine, at a rate of 22,273 tweets per minute starting at the show’s
9 p.m. EST airing. The numbers, however, fell short of the record set by this
year’s season finale of “Pretty Little Liars.” Breaking Bad “keywords” like
Walt, Jesse, and meth were mentioned 200,000, 125,000, and 85,000 times
respectively. This infographic compares the Breaking Bad finale with other
popular finales (tweets only calculated during air time). It virtually blew them all away.

AMC also made a “farewell” video for the shows fans on
YouTube:
A bevy of stars tweeted during the finale, expressing almost
nothing but love and devotion for the show. Many, like myself, were sad to see
the show go. The tweets ranged from hilarious to heartfelt, but each showed an admiration
for the show. Here are some of the tweets:
